While I was in Kyoto visiting a number of shrines we came to the Heian Jingu shrine. We walked into the massive inner courtyard and saw a group of warriors standing in front of us. Each group had different outfits that must have denoted different roles. Some had huge headdress with pointed spikes, others had furry hats and a few had giant weapons. They all got into lines and each group, one by one, would shout their battle cry and march through the courtyard. It reminded me of a miniseries called Shogun from the 1970s that Jane and I have been watching.
