I was lucky enough to visit an extremely important region for Buddhists. Sarnath is the place where the Buddha gave his first lecture on Dharma. He returned to Sarnath shortly after receiving enlightenment. He is also regarded by Hindus as the ninth incarnation of Vishnu. This statue was in a temple dedicated to the life of Buddha. It had elaborate paintings depicting his birth, the moment of his enlightenment and his death. Thousands of Buddhist each year make the pilgrimage to Sarnath. It is interesting to me how much I associate Buddhism to East Asian cultures but in reality he was a Hindu and lived in India.
